Glendale is located primarily in the Verdugo Mountains region of Los Angeles County, about 10 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles. As of 2025, the city had a population of 187,823, making it the fourth-most populous city in Los Angeles County and the 24th-most populous in California.
Before European arrival, the Tongva people lived for thousands of years along the Glendale Narrows of the Los Angeles River, which they called Paayme Paxaayt, or "West River." Villages in the area included Ashwaangna, Hahamongna, Maungna, Tujunga, and Wiqanga. The 1769 Portolá expedition established Spanish presence, but many Native Americans were displaced in 1771 for labor at Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. European diseases further devastated indigenous communities.
In 1784, José María Verdugo, a Spanish army corporal from Baja California, received Rancho San Rafael from the Lieutenant Governor. After retiring from the military in 1798, Verdugo expanded operations to nearly 2,000 cattle and 670 horses, while workers grew crops including grains, peppers, oranges, figs, grapes, and pomegranates. When Verdugo died in 1831, his estate passed to his son Julio and daughter Catalina.
Following American control after the 1847 Treaty of Cahuenga, the Verdugo family's land grant was patented in 1882. However, financial difficulties led to bankruptcy in 1871, and the court divided the ranch into parcels. The arrival of railroads sparked growth, and on March 11, 1887, Glendale's first plat was filed. The city officially incorporated in 1906. Leslie Coombs Brand and Henry E. Huntington brought the Pacific Electric Railway to the area, with the Glendale–Burbank Line operating from 1904 to 1955. Today, Glendale continues as a major production center for animation and film, home to studios including Disneytoon Studios, Marvel Animation, and DreamWorks Animation.
