Norwalk is a city in Los Angeles County located seventeen miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. With a population of 102,773 at the 2020 census, it has grown into a substantial community within the Greater Los Angeles area. The city was founded in the late nineteenth century and officially incorporated in 1957.
Long before modern Norwalk existed, the area was home to the Shoshonean Native American tribe, who lived in the Sejat Indian village and sustained themselves through hunting and gathering. Spanish settlers arrived in the late 1760s, and in 1784, Manuel Nieto received a Spanish land grant called Rancho Los Nietos that encompassed the Norwalk area. Following the Mexican-American War in 1848, the land became available for purchase. In 1869, brothers Atwood and Gilbert Sproul, Oregon residents who remembered the region's fertile soil and giant sycamore trees from an earlier visit, purchased 463 acres for eleven dollars per acre.
The railroad arrived in 1873, and Gilbert Sproul surveyed a town site shortly after the Anaheim Branch Railroad crossed through the area. The name Norwalk was officially recorded in 1874. By the turn of the twentieth century, Norwalk had established itself as a dairy center, with most of its fifty families engaged in farming or dairy work. The area also housed some of Southern California's largest sugar beet farms during this era, attracting many Dutch dairy farmers in the early twentieth century.
Today, Norwalk is a member of the Gateway Cities Council of Governments and maintains sister city relationships with Morelia and Hermosillo in Mexico.
