Temple City is a city in Los Angeles County located northeast of downtown Los Angeles at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, part of a cluster of communities in the west San Gabriel Valley that includes Pasadena, Arcadia, Alhambra, San Marino, and San Gabriel. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 36,494.
The town originated on May 30, 1923, when Walter P. Temple purchased 400 acres of land four miles east of San Gabriel. Temple, born on Rancho La Merced in what is now Montebello, was the son of Pliny Fisk Temple and Antonia Margarita Workman. He envisioned building a community where average people could afford to live and own their homes. Temple divided the area into lots, laid out a park facing Las Tunas Drive, and named streets after friends and family members. He initiated bond issues for street paving and electricity, and successfully petitioned the Pacific Electric Railway Company to extend its Los Angeles to Alhambra line to a depot adjacent to Temple City Park. This railway extension contributed significantly to the city's steady growth.
Originally called the City of Temple, the town was renamed Temple City in 1926 by order of United States Postmaster General Harry Stewart New, who required the change because mail was being misdirected to Tempe, Arizona. Merrill Fitzjohn, founder of Fitzjohn Jewelers on Las Tunas Drive, was appointed as the city's first mayor. Temple City remained a city in name only until its official incorporation on May 25, 1960, following the post-World War II population explosion.
