Toluca Lake is a neighborhood in Los Angeles located in the San Fernando Valley, twelve miles northwest of downtown. The area takes its name from both the neighborhood and a private natural lake maintained by neighboring property owners. Before the Los Angeles River was paved in 1938 and well extraction in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries lowered the water table, the lake was fed by artesian springs.
The history of Toluca Lake extends back to the Tongva people, who lived in the San Fernando Valley for eight thousand years and used the springs and marsh in the area for water, fishing, hunting, and harvesting. Following Spanish colonization in the 1790s and Mexican independence in 1823, the land became part of the rancho system. General Charles Forman, a wealthy landowner who chose the name "Toluca" from a Paiute word meaning fertile or beautiful valley, developed much of the area as the Forman Toluca Ranch, which by 1923 produced peaches, apples, and walnuts. That same year, investors purchased and developed the land as Toluca Lake Park, with a vision of creating the first bedroom community for Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley.
The neighborhood attracted many entertainment industry figures throughout the twentieth century. Bob Hope moved there in the late 1930s and remained until his death in 2003. Aviator Amelia Earhart lived on Valley Spring Lane after marrying publishing magnate George P. Putnam in 1931, choosing the location because of nearby aircraft manufacturing at the Lockheed plant in Burbank.
