The land has a rich history stretching back centuries. The Tongva were the first people to settle here, establishing villages connected by networks of trails and making use of the live oak trees that still flourish throughout the area. In 1771, the Tongva were enslaved by missionaries at Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, earning them the alternate name Gabrielinos. During the Spanish and Mexican periods, the region was known as Rancho La Cañada, with the name deriving from the Spanish word for canyon or ravine. In 1875, Jacob Lanterman and Adolphus Williams purchased the rancho, and development slowly grew thereafter, aided by the area's clean air that attracted people seeking relief from tuberculosis. Flintridge, the southern section, was named after United States senator Frank P. Flint, its developer. The two communities unified in 1976, creating the single incorporated city known today as La Cañada Flintridge.
