By 1780, what became the Sunset Strip served as a major connecting road for El Pueblo de Los Angeles and ranches extending to the Pacific Ocean. During the final years of the nineteenth century, Moses Sherman and his partners of the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad established the town of Sherman, which attracted many working-class railroad employees and earned a reputation as a loosely regulated place welcoming to those wary of government interference. In 1925, Sherman officially adopted the name West Hollywood.
Throughout the twentieth century, West Hollywood evolved into a cultural destination. During Prohibition, it became home to numerous casinos and nightclubs immune from Los Angeles Police Department enforcement. The Sunset Strip transformed again during the late 1960s with the hippie movement, bringing a thriving music publishing industry. After the Soviet Union's dissolution, thousands of Russian Jews immigrated to the city between 1978 and 1992, creating one of the nation's most concentrated Russian-speaking communities outside New York.
