Reseda is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles with roots stretching back to the indigenous Tongva people who lived near the Los Angeles River. The area began its modern development in 1909 when the Suburban Homes Company, led by H. J. Whitley, Harry Chandler, and others, purchased 48,000 acres and laid plans for several valley towns. Reseda originated in 1912 as the town of Marian, named after Marian Otis Chandler, daughter of Los Angeles Times publisher Harrison Gray Otis. The name Reseda, referring to a fragrant Mediterranean plant commonly found in gardens of the era, was first used for a railroad siding. When a post office became necessary in 1921, ninety-two residents voted to rename their community Reseda, and the post office officially opened on July 1, 1922.
The central business district began in 1915 with a hardware store at what is now Reseda Boulevard and Sherman Way, soon joined by other essential services. Agriculture dominated the area through the mid-twentieth century, with Reseda becoming known as one of the nation's largest lettuce producers by the late 1930s, alongside crops of lima beans, sugar beets, and walnuts. After World War II, the neighborhood transformed into a suburban community as large ranches were subdivided for single-family homes and returning veterans sought affordable housing. By 1950, Reseda had over 16,000 residents and became one of the valley's most popular communities. Today, Reseda includes fifteen public and five private schools, along with public parks, a senior center, and a regional branch library.
