Westlake Village is a city in Los Angeles County, California, situated on its western border with Ventura County. Incorporated in 1981, it became the 82nd municipality of Los Angeles County, with a population of 8,029 at the 2020 census. The city takes its name from the master-planned community built around Westlake Lake, which sits at the heart of a development that straddles the county line, with roughly two-thirds of the community extending into the Ventura County city of Thousand Oaks.
The region has a long human history. About three thousand years ago, the Chumash people moved into the area, hunting rabbits and other game while gathering grains and acorns. A Chumash village called Hipuc was settled here around 500 BCE. In January 1770, an expedition led by Gaspar de Portolá became the first documented Europeans to encounter the Chumash in the Conejo Valley.
The land later became part of Rancho Simi, a Spanish land grant given to the Pico family in 1795. In 1881, the Russell brothers purchased a large portion for cattle ranching. The land changed hands again in 1925 to William Randolph Hearst and in 1943 to Fred Albertson, who operated it as a movie ranch where numerous films and television shows were filmed. In 1963, Daniel K. Ludwig's company purchased the 12,000-acre ranch for $32 million and commissioned a master-planned community designed by A. C. Martin and Associates. The Los Angeles County portion was incorporated as the City of Westlake Village in 1981.
