Palmdale is a suburban city in northern Los Angeles County, situated in the Antelope Valley of Southern California, with the San Gabriel Mountains separating it from the Los Angeles Basin to the south. The first permanent settlement, Palmenthal, was established in 1886 by Lutheran settlers from the American Midwest, mostly of German and Swiss descent, who mistook Joshua trees for palms. When drought struck in the 1890s, most settlers relocated closer to the Southern Pacific railroad tracks, creating the new community of Palmdale with its own railroad station.
Modern development accelerated after the California Aqueduct's completion in 1913, bringing water from Owens Valley and spurring agricultural growth. The 1921 completion of a major motor vehicle link to Los Angeles further boosted the local economy. Palmdale's transformation from agricultural center to aerospace hub began in the 1950s when the Air Force established Plant 42 at the airport and Lockheed opened a facility there.
